Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia much to my surprise, was my favorite eastern European city and would highly recommend to anyone.  It had a bit of everything with the history, views, caves, food, wine and mountains.

Jesse had done a bit of research and Ljubljana was always on the list of must see sights in eastern Europe. The pronunciation is lub-lee- yana. Yes, it was tough for us too. Ljubljanica River ran through the city with people taking boat rides and restaurants lined the waterway. For the most part the prices weren't too expensive, but still more than the rest of eastern European countries we visited.

We couldn't have picked a better location for our Airbnb. Our host was a bit odd and called it a "wellness stay" with many rules including no meat, don't put your suit cases on the bamboo floor (which is for the most part the entire apartment). He also had Balinese incense when we arrived. We were pretty sure he wouldn't have been able to defend himself from a fly.

A few of our days were spent on walking tours of the beautiful city. In the city you can explore the large castle at the top of the hill where there is a small vineyard. Slovenia has one winery for every seventy people so Jesse and I felt that we needed to try Slovenian wine the right way so we did a wine tasting.

Other days were spent at Lake Bled, which is a very famous lake about fifty minutes from Ljubljana. Bled has been a holiday getaway for over 100 years, but tourism itself has grown in Slovenia by over 65% since 2012.

The Lakes were amazing! We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather and the views were spectacular. You can walk all the way around the lake, swim, kayak and visit the small island in the middle. There was also a large castle in the distance that you are able to explore and have a bite to eat.

And of course we saw advertisements for cave tours so Jesse signed us up. Surprisingly Slovenia has the most individual caves anywhere in the world topping out at 10,000. Jesse is always looking to keep things interesting so we did a 3 hour walking tour through the caves!
