Hvar and Split Croatia

For the last few months we had been looking forward to our friends making the journey to visit from Colorado. We were eager to see familiar faces and spend time as a group in a few locations for the eleven days they were with us. After about 48 hours of travel and a few unfortunate delays Andy and Bri finally arrived! Due to the delays we only had a day in Dubrovnik with them, but we made the most of it and completed a quick 8 hour tour of the city, eating and drinking our was across town before heading to the island of Hvar.

Hvar is an island off the coast of Croatia about a 2 and 1/2 hour ferry ride northwest from Dubrovnik. We stayed in an Airbnb where the host, whom is a retired chef, runs a few apartments above his restaurant. We decided to eat a meal prepared by our host one of the evenings where everything is hand picked from their garden and the seafood is fresh.

For only a 3 night stay we did the general walking around and exploring the area, but as Bri and Andy were on vacation they were looking for lots of cocktails and sun. We spent the first day sitting at a beach club where the strawberry daiquiris flowed freely. We were also able to get out of the main port and tour around the island. The four of us rented a car and spent one day traveling from town to town and it was such a relief to not have to be the passenger navigating as Andy kindly took over my duties for the afternoon. Our last day allowed Andy and Jesse to rent a jeep to bump around the dirt trails that Jesse so badly misses, where Bri and I filled our bellies with mussels and our favorite, white wine.

Three days seemed to be enough for the smaller island and we were excited to get to Split. Our days were a mix of walking about, history tours, Krka Waterfalls, boat days and beach days. Along the port is a long run of the expensive tourists restaurants, but within the the old city walls we have found some of our favorite restaurants thus far. It was the best food city we have visited, and the cost was less than Dubrovnik which was a nice surprise. (Sue and Sid were our lucky add on for the day traveling from the UK to Krka Waterfalls).

Split was originally founded by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 300 AD. He built the city and its grand walls as his personal palace where he planned to spend his retirement. In fact unlike every other Roman Emperor and Cesar, he did retire and willfully abdicated the throne. This was also the time when the Roman empire was split into the east and west and would remain this way for the rest of the empires existence. Jesse has many more facts about the history of Split which he found very fascinating and would be happy to discuss with anyone who is interested.

One of our most memorable days was a catamaran that took us to the island of Brac and stopped along the way at the famous "Horn Beach". Bri was able to get her ocean time in, Jesse was able to fly the drone, and we were also able to get some entertainment from a group of college students aboard. There was a one sophisticated lady that stuck out in my mind we will call her, "Red" due to the bright and ill fitting bathing suit and the quantity of wine she had managed to consume. I was lucky enough to meet her at the bar where she complimented by dirty Patagonia hat and mentioned her love of hats that she left at home. Mind you with mascara running down her face from getting in the water and a large bugger hanging out of her nose. Although the conversation was intriguing, I decided to go back to the front of the boat. On her way back to the front as she stepped into the cargo net she managed to spill half of her wine all over herself. Needless to say the young man she was chatting with had moved on.

For Jesse's birthday he wanted to get out of the city, which is the day we went to Krka waterfalls. It consists of multiple terraces of cascading waterfalls. There is a large path that will take you in between with frogs chirping and trout swimming. At the very bottom you can swim in the brisk water, which is where my job as photographer stepped in... on land. I would highly recommend this if you traveling to Split. We had a wonderful time with only about an hour and a half drive and we couldn't beat our company with Sue and Sid with us in the van.

We were sad to see Bri and Andy come and go so fast, but appreciate the opportunity to see friendly and familiar faces along the way.
